Training in Dermatology here provides comprehensive dermatology training in all sub-specialties. The training takes four years and we have excellent job prospects with all trainees, in recent years they have entered consultant or academic posts at the end of training. Many of these have been within the region and there are also opportunities for post CCT training in Dermatological Surgery and Medical Dermatology.

Dermatology is predicted to keep expanding in the future with one of the most common reasons for patients to consult with a doctor being skin disease. This can be linked with the rising numbers of skin cancer as well as the rising number in inflammatory conditions like eczema. It is also a diverse subject allowing trainees the opportunity to see patients of all age groups with a variety of conditions such as: inflammatory, inherited, environmental, occupational or malignant skin disorders. There are also options for training in a sub specialty if you wish for a career with more surgical involvement or surrounding the investigation and treatment of allergic disorders. Due to this Dermatology gives lots of career options.

HEENE have excellent links with Newcastle University resulting in high quality clinical investigation and Laboratory Science, enabling the trainee to have superb opportunities to participate in clinically orientated research. As such within HEE NE a significant number of trainees undertake higher degrees (MDs and PhDs) as Out of Programme research during their training years.  A number of these have gone on to clinical academic posts and continue high quality academic research in Inflammatory Dermatoses, Skin Cancer, Immunology and Genetics.  Generic training in teaching, research, management and presentational skills are all an intrinsic part of the training programme.
