A masterclass is an update course lasting one day. Please read the description carefully around what will be delivered. A masterclass is not at master’s level. Some will be a basic introduction to a subject and some may be building on previous knowledge. A masterclass does not prepare anyone to deliver specialist services. We recommend you speak directly to your chosen university about the details of any masterclass you are interested in.

A module will have academic credits attached to it at either level 6 (bachelor degree level) or level 7 (master’s level). You will be expected to complete an academic assignment. Some modules will last for 9–12 months and some may be completed within three months.

Advanced ECG in practice

What is it about?

This award facilitates healthcare professionals to develop, enhance, appraise and evaluate evidence-based knowledge underpinning the issues relating to electrocardiography interpretation and treatment of the adult patient with cardiac disease. The award addresses the multi-professional care and management of clients who require cardiac monitoring.

Who is it for?

Healthcare professionals from primary care, pre-hospital care and the acute care setting

What will participants learn?Module content includes: 
• ECG recording using current guidelines 
• normal sinus rhythm, junctional rates, idioventricular rates 
• action potential 
• axis 
• supraventricular arrhythmias - atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, premature atrial contractions (PACs), junctional tachycardia - effects on patient and treatment 
• ventricular arrhythmias - ventricular ectopics, accelerated idioventricular rhythm, ventricular tachycardia, ventricular fibrillation - effects on patient and treatment (ICDs) 
• atrioventricular (AV) blocks - sinus block, atrioventricular blocks (pacing) 
• bundle branch blocks (pacing, CRT) 
• acute coronary syndromes (STEMI/NSTEMI/U/A) 
• ECG - miscellaneous changes

 

How will it be delivered?

Online distance learning using a virtual learning environment over a 10 week period. 

How will participants be assessed?

Summative assessment is a two-hour unseen written examination. You are provided with a selection of 3- or 5-lead rhythm strips and 12-lead ECGs to interpret, analyse, evaluate and discuss.

What experience / qualifications do participants need?    

Applicants must: 
• have evidence of ability to study at Level 6 
• be working in an environment where ECG interpretation can be employed
• have access to IT equipment for students choosing the distance learning option
