Here you can find all the modules and masterclasses that we commission as part of our continuing workfroce development (CWD) portfolio.

You can filter the results by the following:

  • course type
  • university
  • level and credits
  • subject area

A masterclass is an update course lasting one day. Please read the description carefully around what will be delivered. A masterclass is not at master’s level. Some will be a basic introduction to a subject and some may be building on previous knowledge. A masterclass does not prepare anyone to deliver specialist services. We recommend you speak directly to your chosen university about the details of any masterclass you are interested in.

A module will have academic credits attached to it at either level 6 (bachelor degree level) or level 7 (master’s level). You will be expected to complete an academic assignment. Some modules will last for 9–12 months and some may be completed within three months.

You can also search via keyword using the search box on the right hand side.

COPD and Asthma

What is it about?

Asthma and COPD will be presented as distinct components as they are different disease processes with dissimilar causes and treatments.  The main aim of the module will be to help the practitioner correctly identify patients with Asthma and COPD so that patients can be given optimal advice, support, education and treatment.  In addition, the patient's response to the illness experience will be explored alongside strategies to promote patient empowerment in managing their disease state, with the hope that patients will eventually experience minimal symptoms with maximal improvements in their health and quality of life.

Who is it for?

Healthcare professionals in either a hospital or community setting and are regularly involved in the care of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma and require a nationally recognised professional qualification in COPD and asthma for safe practice. For example nurses working in the community, GP practices, out of hours, rapid response and hospital settings who, given the burden of respiratory disease in the NHS, now require more knowledge regarding the conditions of COPD and asthma and how these conditions can be optimally managed in accord with current guidance to improve patient outcomes.

What will participants learn?

You learn about the respiratory disease trajectories and current evidence supporting the best ways to manage patients with asthma and COPD in the acute and chronic phases of their disease. You learn how respiratory disease is diagnosed, assessed and holistically managed in accord with current consensus guidance.

You also learn how to undertake a clinical history and a case review of a patient with asthma/COPD as well as how to perform the relevant clinical examination and investigations the patient requires, for example cardiopulmonary examination and spirometry and x-ray analysis. Following this you learn how to titrate and monitor the therapeutic regime a patient with asthma and COPD requires to help optimise their clinical state and maintain clinical stability. You explore the patient's response to the illness experience alongside strategies to promote patient empowerment in managing their disease state, with the hope that patients will eventually experience minimal symptoms with maximal improvements in their health and quality of life.

How will it be delivered?

This module runs for 10 weeks with a full day taught component each week. Experiential learning techniques help to build your confidence in respiratory disease diagnostics and holistic therapeutics for your workplace. Case studies are explored to assist in application of theory to practice situations.

How will participants be assessed?

The summative assessment is a 4,000-word case study.

What experience / qualifications do participants need?

Applicants should have at least six months experience of working with patients with respiratory problems.

Support in the workplace with an experienced respiratory practitioner is required to ensure application of principle to practice in the workplace and the development of core respiratory care skills.
