A masterclass is an update course lasting one day. Please read the description carefully around what will be delivered. A masterclass is not at master’s level. Some will be a basic introduction to a subject and some may be building on previous knowledge. A masterclass does not prepare anyone to deliver specialist services. We recommend you speak directly to your chosen university about the details of any masterclass you are interested in.

A module will have academic credits attached to it at either level 6 (bachelor degree level) or level 7 (master’s level). You will be expected to complete an academic assignment. Some modules will last for 9–12 months and some may be completed within three months.

End of Life Care (Level 6 and 7)

Level 6:

What is it about?

This module  discusses current issues in end of life care for the patient and their family and how these might be addressed. The module is delivered via distance-learning, utilising the virtual learning environment (VLE) e-learning@tees over ten weeks. The VLE contains learning materials that address key topic areas you study, including: handling difficult questions, symptom management, ethical issues and caring for the dying patient. You are supported throughout the module while undertaking a variety of activities including group discussions relating to the holistic management of palliative care patients. 
 

Who is it for?

This module is aimed at health care professionals who are working with patients with palliative care needs in the end phase of their life

What will participants learn?

You study a variety of topics relating to palliative and end-of-life care including:
. society's approach to death and dying
. symptom management
. current policies and guidelines relating to end-of-life care
. cultural aspect of end-of-life care
. ethical decision-making
. recognising dying
. communication.

This list is not exhaustive - the award considers end-of-life care from a holistic perspective.
 

How will it be delivered?

You learn by being involved in a variety of distance learning activities including discussion boards, recorded lectures and seminars, and interactive quizzes. 

How will participants be assessed?

You are assessed by a 4,000-word written case study where you critically analyse and evaluate an episode of patient care. 

What experience / qualifications do participants need?

Applicants must be working in an area with patients who have palliative and end-of-life care needs.

Level 7

What is it about?

This module aims to prepare experienced healthcare practitioners to develop a sound knowledge base in the area of end-of-life care. 

Through distance-learning activities the module will develop the student's ability to critically analyse and evaluate the provision of end of life within the student's own area of practice. It will encourage the student to consider how end-of-life care is delivered and how it can be further developed or enhanced.Students accessing this module will be practitioners in health care and be involved with patients and their families in end-of-life care situations.

 

Who is it for?

Experienced healthcare practitioners. 

What will participants learn?

You study a variety of topics relating to palliative and end-of-life care including:
Death, dying and society
Current policy and guidelines
