Here you can find all the modules and masterclasses that we commission as part of our continuing workfroce development (CWD) portfolio.

You can filter the results by the following:

  • course type
  • university
  • level and credits
  • subject area

A masterclass is an update course lasting one day. Please read the description carefully around what will be delivered. A masterclass is not at master’s level. Some will be a basic introduction to a subject and some may be building on previous knowledge. A masterclass does not prepare anyone to deliver specialist services. We recommend you speak directly to your chosen university about the details of any masterclass you are interested in.

A module will have academic credits attached to it at either level 6 (bachelor degree level) or level 7 (master’s level). You will be expected to complete an academic assignment. Some modules will last for 9–12 months and some may be completed within three months.

Enhancing Competency for Practioners Working with Children and Young People Who Require High Dependency/Emergency

What is it about?

This module will enhance your knowledge and understanding of a range of presentations and initial measures to stabilise the child.
The focus is on the multi-disciplinary team; developing a care plan related to emergency and high dependency settings. You study the assessment of potentially life-threatening symptoms in children from birth to adolescence, from the first point of contact until the child’s discharge or transfer. You link theory to practice through case studies and patient simulation.

Who is it for?

Healthcare professionals working with sick children who are at risk of serious illness and life-threatening deterioration.

What will participants learn?

You study anatomy and physiology and developmental stages from birth to adolescence alongside the pathophysiology associated with presenting symptoms and specific interventions. These are linked to triggers and symptoms of childhood illness to facilitate theory/practice links.
You explore the needs and management of acutely ill children who are highly dependent on others to maintain their safety. Technology enhances teaching and there are interactive simulation sessions with opportunities to engage in clinical decision making and teamwork and receive feedback on participation and learning.

How will it be delivered?

6 weeks total with 3 weeks university contact time and 3 weeks open distance learning

How will participants be assessed?

The summative assessment is in week ten of the module with a three-hour written examination with four unseen questions related to a seen scenario. The scenario is selected by the module leader from a selection of four scenarios given to you in your handbook. Electronic feedback is provided through e-vision.

What experience / qualifications do participants need?

Should must be a qualified practitioner who provides care for sick children at risk of serious and/or life-threatening illness.
