What is it about?
This module addresses the guidelines described by the Critical Care Nurse Education Review Forum, incorporating the Critical Care National Competency Framework Step 3.
Designed for those working in critical care, you learn by a variety of learning and teaching strategies including seminars, direct supervision in the clinical area, e-resources and simulation. A virtual learning environment, e-learning@tees, is provided to support you with podcasts blogs and videos. There is an emphasis upon the safe and effective integration of knowledge and evidence to support clinical decision-making. Highly realistic patient simulation training within the simulation laboratory provides opportunities for you to experience teamwork, leadership, communication skills and aspects of clinical practice, in a protected learning environment.
The module is delivered over five contact days over a 10 week period within semester two. It addresses the complex care required by critically ill patients enabling you to develop evidence-based knowledge and skills to support effective clinical decision making.
Who is it for?
This module is for adult critical care nurses currently working in critical care.
What will participants learn?
The taught component is over a 10-week period within semester one, comprising one day every alternate week in University (five days in total).
Knowledge development is supported by a variety of methods including seminars, direct supervision in the clinical area, e-resources and simulation. Student-led seminars based on case studies and scenarios encourages you to enhance individual learning needs while networking and extending your knowledge and practice base. You share group work and experiences with professionals from a variety of other acute and critical care areas. There is an emphasis on reflective practice and decision making strategies. You are encouraged to identify your own learning needs and undertake self-directed study in the form of weekly workbooks and pre-seminar reading. Highly realistic patient simulation training provides opportunities for you to experience teamwork, leadership, communication skills and aspects of clinical practice, in a learning environment. There is an emphasis upon the safe and effective integration of knowledge and evidence to support clinical decision-making. A virtual learning environment is provided to support you. You are encouraged to engage in all aspects of this environment, including blogs, podcasts and videos to facilitate an interactive learning environment. How will it be delivered?
5 full days over 10 Weeks
How will participants be assessed?
Formative Assessment
By the eighth week of the module you are required to submit a word processed draft plan of your assignment (maximum of 400 words). Feedback is based upon the relevant aspects of the assessment criteria for the summative assignment.
Summative assessment
Component 1 – 4000 word written assignment (100%)
You are required to submit a 3000 word written assignment which demonstrates a systematic and evaluative approach to clinical decision-making in relation to the holistic care of the critically ill adult patient. You are required to critically debate and explore the key aspects of the care in relation to the role of the adult critical care nurse (normally submitted in week 10, semester two).
This assesses learning outcomes: RKCS1-2
Component 2 - Portfolio of competencies at stage three (pass/fail)
Portfolio evidence of achievement of step three competencies (normally submitted in week 12, semester three).
What experience / qualifications do participants need?
Applicants should have already complered the step one and step two competencies and T4t TRAINING.
