A masterclass is an update course lasting one day. Please read the description carefully around what will be delivered. A masterclass is not at master’s level. Some will be a basic introduction to a subject and some may be building on previous knowledge. A masterclass does not prepare anyone to deliver specialist services. We recommend you speak directly to your chosen university about the details of any masterclass you are interested in.

A module will have academic credits attached to it at either level 6 (bachelor degree level) or level 7 (master’s level). You will be expected to complete an academic assignment. Some modules will last for 9–12 months and some may be completed within three months.

What is it about?

This module addresses the guidelines for critical care nursing as described by the Critical Care Nurse Education Review Forum, incorporating the Critical Care National Competency Framework Step 2.The course is delivered across five contact days over a 10-week period within semester 1. You address the complex care required by critically ill patients, enabling you to develop evidence-based knowledge and skills to support effective clinical decision-making.There is emphasis on the safe and effective integration of knowledge and evidence to support clinical decision-making. You access highly realistic patient simulation training in our simulation laboratory. This allows you to experience teamwork, leadership, communication skills, and aspects of clinical practice in a protected learning environment. 

Who is it for?

This module is for adult critical care nurses currently working in critical care. 

What will participants learn?

We use a variety of teaching methods to help you develop your knowledge and understanding. Our teaching methods include seminars, direct supervision in the clinical area, e-resources and simulation.  You also make use of the University’s virtual learning environment e-learning@tees where you can access podcasts, blogs and videos. 

Student-led seminars, based on case studies and scenarios, encourage you as a multidisciplinary practitioner to enhance your individual learning needs, while networking and extending your knowledge and practice base.  

You also share group work and experiences with professionals from a variety of other acute and critical care areas. As a group you study reflective practice and decision-making strategies. You are encouraged to identify your own learning needs and undertake self-directed study through e-learning@tees with weekly workbooks and pre-seminar reading.

How will it be delivered?

5 full days over 10 Weeks +M16

How will participants be assessed?

You undertake a formative, self-assessed mock examination in week 9, semester 1.

Your summative assessment consists of two components.

• Component 1 (100%) is a seen scenario-based exam (normally in week 14, semester 1)
• Component 2 (pass/fail) is completing the Critical Care Nurse Education Review Forum National Competency Framework Step 2

What experience / qualifications do participants need?

Applicants require a minimum of one year’s experience in a critical care area. You must also have completed all of Step 1 of the National Competency Framework for Critical Care.

You should also have completed Transfer for Training or plan to complete it within a year.

Assessors supporting a nurse on this module should be competent critical care nurse from your clinical area. They must also have completed a recognised course of study that meets the requirements for mentorship (NMC, 2008) as identified by the Critical Care Nurse Education Review Forum.

You are required to complete all Step 2 competencies within six months.
