A masterclass is an update course lasting one day. Please read the description carefully around what will be delivered. A masterclass is not at master’s level. Some will be a basic introduction to a subject and some may be building on previous knowledge. A masterclass does not prepare anyone to deliver specialist services. We recommend you speak directly to your chosen university about the details of any masterclass you are interested in.

A module will have academic credits attached to it at either level 6 (bachelor degree level) or level 7 (master’s level). You will be expected to complete an academic assignment. Some modules will last for 9–12 months and some may be completed within three months.

Advanced Social Determinants of Health

What is it about?

This module provides students with the knowledge that underpins the third year specialist module in urodynamic science aswell as the underpinning knowledge to undertake learning in the workplace. This is a predominantly clinical module with the emphasis on the place of Lower Urinary Tract Investigation within the wider clinical patient pathway. Students will acquire a knowledge of how Urodynamics and affiliated investigations contribute to overall patient management. The students will be taught how to critically appraise a clinical paper.

What will participants learn?


Intended Knowledge Outcomes:
•Demonstrate a critical understanding of the fundamental scientific principles, design, operation, quality assurance and safety processes and features of the instrumentation required to assess lower urinary tract physiology and pathophysiology.
•Display a fundamental understanding of pathologies affecting paediatric patients, patients with complex urodynamic disorders and women with pelvic floor dysfunction including disorders affecting the lower bowel and genital tract.
•Critically evaluate the indications, modes and choice of technology to investigate lower urinary tract disorders with specific reference to pelvic floor dysfunction.
•Demonstrate a thorough appraisal of clinical cases and describe the necessary investigation and appropriate treatment of these patients.
•Possess an overview of common urological surgical procedures pertaining to functional Lower urinary Tract disorders.
•Critically review medical literature in the field of Functional 

Intended Skill Outcomes:
•Convey complex scientific information in clear reports to specialist and non-specialist audiences, including patients, of the diagnostic results, conclusions and consequences of investigations in the lower urinary tract. 
•Deliver a thorough critical appraisal of a published clinical study.
•Describe the entire patient pathway for complex functional urological patients including an overview of the surgical treatments.

120 minute written examination
3000 word written exercise


What experience / qualifications do participants need?

Applicants must have an honours degree (1st or 2:1) in a pure or applied science area relevant to the specialism for which they are applying. Applicants with a relevant 2:2 degree will also be considered if they have an MSc or PhD in the specialism for which they are applying.
