What is it about?
This module provides students with in-depth, case study-based understanding of social determinants of health, their contribution to health inequalities and the basis for developing policies and interventions to address social determinants of health. Emphasis is placed on research led teaching by leading authorities in the field.

What will participants learn?
Intended Knowledge Outcomes:
• Understand the importance of social determinants of health in contributing to health outcomes and health inequalities
• Understand how research evidence on social determinants of health can be used to develop and evaluate public policies, and be able to apply that understanding to specific cases
• Understand the significance for health of public policies outside the health sector, and choices made by private actors outside the health sector.
Intended Skill Outcomes:
•Critically to assess research evidence on such topics as income inequality and health, place (e.g. ‘neighborhood effects’ and regional divides) and health, and stress and health
•Apply that skill and the understandings described under the previous heading to specific cases of intervention design and policy analysis and evaluation;
•In the form of written work that meets high standards of scientific quality and clarity.
