What is it about?
This module will provide students with a higher specialised body of knowledge which underpins
the principles of specialist practice in Lower Gastrointestinal (GI) Physiology.

What will participants learn?
Intended Knowledge Outcomes:
•Demonstrate a critical understanding of the fundamental scientific principles, design, operation, quality assurance and safety processes and features of the instrumentation required to assess lower gastrointestinal(GI)physiology and pathophysiology.
•Display an understanding of the physiology and pathophysiology of the lower gastrointestinal tract and use this to plan non-interventional therapies for the treatment of faecal incontinence and obstructive defaecation.
•Demonstrate a critical understanding of how the techniques of luminal ultrasonography for benign anorectal disorders can be applied to the investigation and staging of anal and rectal cancer.
•Demonstrate an understanding of how the equipment and manometric techniques used in lower GI physiology can be applied to assessing the upper GI tract, including oesophageal, small bowel, biliary and sphincter of Oddi motility
•Critically evaluate the indications, modes and choice of technology to investigate lower
gastrointestinal disease and anal and rectal cancer.
Intended Skill Outcomes:
•Convey complex scientific information in clear reports or presentations, to specialist and nonspecialist audiences, including patients, of the diagnostic results, conclusions and consequences of investigations of the lower gastrointestinal tract.
•Apply the modes of technology used in the lower GI tract to assess upper GI function.
•Further complementary clinical skills are introduced in this module, but will be devloped and assessed in the workplace.

What experience / qualifications do participants need?
Applicants must have an honours degree (1st or 2:1) in a pure or applied science area relevant to the specialism for which they are applying. Applicants with a relevant 2:2 degree will also be considered if they have an MSc or PhD in the specialism for which they are applying.
