A masterclass is an update course lasting one day. Please read the description carefully around what will be delivered. A masterclass is not at master’s level. Some will be a basic introduction to a subject and some may be building on previous knowledge. A masterclass does not prepare anyone to deliver specialist services. We recommend you speak directly to your chosen university about the details of any masterclass you are interested in.

A module will have academic credits attached to it at either level 6 (bachelor degree level) or level 7 (master’s level). You will be expected to complete an academic assignment. Some modules will last for 9–12 months and some may be completed within three months.

Radiation Safety Physics 2

What is it about?

This module will provide an introduction to some fundamental concepts of economics that are relevant for healthy policy decision making and analysis. The first day will focus on how markets work, why they fail in healthcare and an introduction to health economics and economic evaluation.  The three main types of economic evaluation (cost-effectiveness analysis, cost-utility analysis and cost-benefit analysis), how and when they should be applied, and their pros and cons will be discussed.

Intended Knowledge Outcomes:
•Describe the fundamental principles of health economics 
•Apply the fundamental principles of health economics to decision making in healthcare 
•Discuss the role of markets in the demand and supply of healthcare 
•Discuss the different methods for measuring costs and benefits in economic evaluation 
•Discuss different methods for eliciting preferences and the strengths and weaknesses of each method
•Critically appraise a health economics article
•Interpret basic regression coefficients from a DCE
•Apply the appropriate technique of economic evaluation to resource allocation decisions
•Describe the different methods that can be used to assist healthcare priority setting.

Intended Skill Outcomes:
•Analyse particular health care reforms applying economic theory
•Analyse health policy initiatives applying economic theory.
