What is it about?
It enables midwives to develop the skills required by the Professional Midwifery Advocate Competency Profile (NHS England, 2017) and to subsequently to undertake the Professional Midwifery Advocate (PMA) role to deliver the NHS England AEQUIP model of support to midwives and pregnant women and their families.
Who is it for?
This module would suit midwives who had previously been a Supervisor of Midwives (NMC statutory role prior to 2016) wanting to transition to the role of professional midwifery advocate.
What will participants learn?
The learning and teaching opportunities you engage with will be determined in a learning agreement which includes a gap analysis of your current skill profile and the competency profile of the PMA. The learning agreement is agreed and signed by you, your PMA mentor and the University module team, and you will use an e-portfolio to capture the opportunities that you have engaged with and to critically reflect on how these evidence the development of the PMA competencies required. Feedback is an important part of the learning journey and at several points in your study you have the opportunity to get formative feedback from your PMA mentor and the University module team. This enables you understand your progress and to deepen your engagement with your programme of study.
How will it be delivered?
4 days over approximately 4 months
How will participants be assessed?
The e-folio must contain a signed off statement from the practice mentor evidencing meeting of all Professional Midwifery Advocate Competencies.
What experience / qualifications do participants need?
Applicants must be registered midwives, must previously have been a Supervisor of Midwives and must be supported to attend and have suitable PMA mentorship in their employment.
