What is it about?
This module will give you a critical insight into the mental health of older people, with a particular focus on the main demographically/epidemiologically prevalent issues of dementia, delirium and depression. As the ethos of the module is maintaining personhood, you will examine strategies for maximising independence, choice and mental well-being and develop a critical awareness of relationship-centred approaches.

Individuals who are driving and enabling practice development.
What will participants learn?
The course covers the following topics:
mental health and the older person;
dementia, delirium and depression;
contexts of care, environment and the therapeutic milieu;
recovery, wellbeing and holism;
behaviour that challenges;
mental capacity and consent; and
person-centred care and relationship-centred care.
How will it be delivered?
Combination of interactive lectures, seminars and workshops. You will also undertake directed study and use the e-learning portal.
How will participants be assessed?
Assessment will consist of a case study (essay) focussed on an older person which will allow you to explore different perspectives on mental health and wellbeing. You will be required to evaluate a range of strategies and approaches with regard to their potential and actual effectiveness.
What experience / qualifications do participants need?
Previous evidence of level 5 study. The student should work professionally with older people, who may have mental health needs.
