A masterclass is an update course lasting one day. Please read the description carefully around what will be delivered. A masterclass is not at master’s level. Some will be a basic introduction to a subject and some may be building on previous knowledge. A masterclass does not prepare anyone to deliver specialist services. We recommend you speak directly to your chosen university about the details of any masterclass you are interested in.

A module will have academic credits attached to it at either level 6 (bachelor degree level) or level 7 (master’s level). You will be expected to complete an academic assignment. Some modules will last for 9–12 months and some may be completed within three months.

Improving dementia care

What is it about?

This 50-hour non-accredited, self-directed online course is for registered and unregistered practitioners and carers with an interest in, or responsibility for, the care of people with dementia. The course encourages you to think critically about what it means to be person-centred, and reflect upon the challenges of providing quality care. Real accounts of practice from people affected by dementia, their family members and practitioners enrich this interactive course. Written assuming no prior knowledge, the online learning guides support you in building your understanding of dementia care through discussions of up-to-date research and theory, brought to life through interactive activities and audio-visual accounts from practice.

Who is it for?
It is suitable for any practitioner's in health and social care interested in the basics of health and wellbeing.

What will participants learn?

This 50-hour multimedia online course is focused on dementia care. In the course of your studies, you will develop an understanding of:

the medical and physiological dimensions of dementia including symptoms, changes in the brain, diagnosis and medication
the experience of dementia in relation to memory, identity and social relationships
a person-centred approach to meeting the needs of the person with dementia
the impact of the design of the physical environment
how organisational cultures shape the quality of care and
decision making, capacity, consent and risk.

E-learning.

How will participants be assessed?
Although this course does not carry university credit, regular computer marked tests and self-reviews can be used to test your understanding. The course is entirely self-directed and includes learning advisor support.

What experience / qualifications do participants need?    
There are no entry requirements.
