Why choose ACCS ?

Acute Care Common Stem Core training is a 3 year training programme intended to follow foundation training, comprising attachments in Acute Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine. ACCS intends to produce junior doctors who are able to recognise and manage the sick patient, and who have the complementary training required for specialisation in Emergency Medicine, Acute Internal Medicine and ICM.

ACCS is a unique training programme which provides trainees with the opportunity to become skilled in the assessment and management of critically ill patients in a variety of settings; and provides a basis for entering into higher specialty training programmes, including Intensive Care Medicine and single or dual training ICM training programmes. Anaesthesia and Intensive Care is an exciting, challenging and rewarding career pathway, with opportunities to work in different sub-specialties with highly skilled teams; and opportunities for continued learning and professional development throughout your career!

As a trainee what can I expect from my training programme?

The first 2 years involve rotation between hospitals throughout the region including Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals, Sunderland, James Cook University Hospital, Darlington and Cumberland Royal Infirmary. Training is delivered in 3 – 6 month attachments and usually trainees are allocated to one hospital for a 12 month period. The hospitals on the rotation have a broad case mix including Acute Medical specialties, major Surgical and Transplant specialties; and Emergency Medicine. The Royal Victoria Infirmary and James Cook University Hospitals both have recognition as Major Trauma Centres.

The hospitals on the rotation and patient case mix provide a broad experience across medical and surgical specialties. There is a regional teaching programme specifically for ACCS trainees, along with regional ICM teaching and high fidelity simulation training. All trainees undertake a new starters’ course in Anaesthesia and training for transfer course. Educational supervision is provided by dedicated supervisors with experience of ACCS. There is support for trainees undertaking examinations; and trainees go on to enjoy great success at competitive recruitment to specialty training posts in all themes.
