Health Education England North East has a structured 4 year training programme in Endocrinology and Diabetes Mellitus managed by the Specialist Training Committee. We are committed to train all trainees in Acute Medicine to Level 2.
Our aim as a training region is to produce individuals with an aptitude towards MDT working, with demonstrable practical analytical management skills of clinical situations and who are ultimately rounded individuals equally at home with Trust business development issues and multidisciplinary discussion of patient care issues.
It is a Dual Accredited Specialty with General (Internal) Medicine.
Why choose Endocrinology and diabetes?
Endocrinology and diabetes is a broad ranging specialty encompassing basic mechanisms of physiology and pharmacology coupled with the ability to improve quality of life and long-term outcomes through effective disease control, and often cure. Endocrine and metabolic diseases are some of the most commonly encountered in the UK population and are increasing in prevalence and impact emphasising the need to continue to improve health care delivery in the specialty. Endocrine diseases and diabetes affect every physiological system of the body and specialists need a wide range of skills and expertise, and make a major contribution to general medicine in its broadest sense.
As a trainee what can I expect from my training programme?
The 4 year rotation includes the Royal Victoria Infirmary, James Cook University Hospital, Sunderland, Durham, Darlington, South Tyneside, Gateshead, North Tees and Northumbria. Each trainee will be placed in a central unit (RVI, JCUH) for at least two years.
The Endocrinology and Diabetes programme is one of the top performing in the country providing the highest standard of opportunities in clinical and academic domains. There are frequent Academic Clinical Lecturer posts available to apply for and leadership roles are actively encouraged.
We have enthusiastic and nationally renowned trainers and actively encourage study leave to assist in training. There is a wonderful work atmosphere across the region and standards of training in all domains are high as evidenced by the achievement the trainees have made.
