Why choose Plastic Surgery?

Plastic Surgery is concerned with the restoration of form and function offering an extremely broad range of sub-specialties such as burns, cleft lip & palate, hands, breast reconstruction, craniofacial surgery, head and neck surgery and lower limb trauma. One of the attractions of plastic surgery is the ability to operate on almost every part of the body, to improve the quality of life from new-born babies through to the elderly.

As a trainee what can I expect from my training programme?

The Plastic Surgery programme rotates through three main units, the Royal Victoria Infirmary (Newcastle-upon-Tyne), University Hospital of North Durham (Durham) and James Cook University Hospital (Middlesbrough).

The programme offers excellent experience in all aspects of Plastic Surgery. We have a busy Burns Unit (which recently achieved the best survival figures in the national audit) and Cleft programme. There are nationally-recognised Hand and Head & Neck units in Newcastle and an established centre for the treatment of Vascular Malformations at the James Cook University Hospital.

Furthermore each unit on the rotation offers broad exposure to plastic surgery trauma and general plastic surgery procedures. A huge amount of job satisfaction is gained from improving the form and function in these patients. There is are regular regional and departmental teaching programs. Strong emphasis is placed on research, audit, publications and presentations.
