Psychiatry in FP Training

Psychiatry in Foundation Programme

The Northern Foundation School offers F1 and F2 placements in conjunction with Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne & Wear NHS Foundation Trust (CNTW)  and Tees Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust (TEWV).

Overview of an FP doctor's role whilst working in Psychiatry

F1 and F2 posts will be 4 months in duration, based within a variety of specialties within psychiatry. By the end of the rotation, the FP doctor will be expected to develop confidence in obtaining comprehensive psychiatric history, mental state examinations, and develop formulations with appropriate management plans. They will be able to gain exposure and become confident in identifying common psychiatric presentations and develop awareness of how to deal with them. They will gain an understanding of the different services within psychiatry, the care programme framework and interface of psychiatry with other specialties. The F1/F2 will be an integral part of the Multidisciplinary team, provide medical input as well as contribute to joint working in terms of psychiatric assessments, risk assessments and treatment plans.

All F1 and F2s will have a nominated Clinical Supervisor in psychiatry who will offer 1 hour protected supervision time every week and ensure that your educational objectives are met and learning is consolidated. Most F1/F2s benefit from unique and important opportunities in developing the core leadership skills, presentation and communication skills.

Your Clinical Supervisor will meet with each new F1/F2 to discuss how evidence of learning can be collated and mapped appropriately to the Foundation Curriculum.

Better Doctors Better Patients (BDBP) is the regional professionalism course that is available to all of our Foundation year 1 doctors.

It is a fun and interactive course that is delivered across 3 days encompassing many aspects of professionalism with the aim of making Foundation doctors safer, happier, more effective and efficient and therefore more able to deliver excellent quality care to our patients.

The face to face course training is supported by a manual and webinars.

It covers key themes such as well being, self-development, communication and teamworking skills, patient safety, quality improvement, non-technical skills and leadership.

These themes overlap extensively with the Enhance programme which is also available to Foundation doctors.

Many LEP’s have taken the principles and concepts of the better doctors better patients course to provide further training into Foundation year 2.

The programme is led jointly by Dr Rhian Jones and Dr Charlotte Bates who both work at the Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital

They are supported by ‘core trainers’ Dr Nigel Stout, Dr Shrikanth Mada and Mrs Liz Klein

The BDBP team are keen to expand their faculty, and anyone wishing to know more or become involved would be welcome to contact the programme leads.
