Course Recognition Process

Course Recognition Process

The process has been redeveloped in collaboration with postgraduate and undergraduate faculty colleagues and the Royal College of Surgeons.  Recognised courses will be badged by Health Education in the North East, Durham University, Newcastle University Medical Schools and the Royal College of Surgeons for CPD recognition.

Our intention is that this process will aid effective faculty development by reducing duplicate activity and assuring quality.  The process aims to:

  • Recognise the equivalence of faculty development courses being offered by different providers to postgraduate and undergraduate faculty members.
  • Help improve and assure the quality of faculty development courses
  • Support faculty appraisal and accreditation, through the provision of recognised courses.
  • Facilitate full implementation of the GMC's new process for the recognition of trainers with reference to the Academy of Medical Educators seven standards.  The seven areas related directly to the Academy of Medical Educators standards as referenced in: "Recognising and approving trainers: the implementation plan" available at: www.gmc-uk.org/education/10264.asp

Based upon Criteria and Standards for CPD Accreditation developed in the Royal College of Surgeons and within the Deanery the RCS are happy to award the CPD points from the College to the Deanery recognised course.  This approval will be based upon robust QA process run by the Deanery and appropriate extra questions will be asked in accordance with RCS Standards.
