Occupational Health

The Occupational Health Service (OHS) is a professional and confidential service for all medical and dental trainees requiring additional support; we believe that early intervention is essential.

Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is the occupational health provider for all junior doctors employed by the Lead Employer Trust.

The aim of this service is to ensure that each referred trainee has access to the relevant support services to enable them to complete training and contribute to delivering the highest possible quality of care to patients.

A significant amount of doctors and dentists at some point in their career will run into either personal or professional problems which may impact on their work or training and therefore may need additional support.

The support service is provided by a professional team, who has experience of delivering an exemplar and unique service, providing support and occupational health services to medical and dental trainees. The service offers a central point of contact by phone or email. After an initial assessment, additional support can be arranged with an occupational health, psychotherapy or and educational professional. The team has experience of supporting doctors and dentists in a number of areas including:

  • Sickness/ill health (physical, mental, emotional)
  • Personal factors (dealing with stress and anxiety, family concerns, bereavement)
  • Environmental Issues (workload, bullying and harassment, difficulties with the programme)

Referrals are made by the Lead Employer Trust in conjunction with Heads of School; Training Programme Directors & School Managers. Following referral, a trainee will be contacted by Newcastle OHS to explore the nature of their needs and plan with the trainee how best to support them.
