Northern Radiology Academy (NRAD)

Welcome to the Northern Radiology Academy!

The Northern Radiology Academy (NRAD) has been set up in the North East and Cumbria to help improve and facilitate radiology training. The Academy incorporates the radiology simulation suites at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle and the University Hospital of North Durham and the standardised ultrasound simulation training suite based at the University of Teesside.

UHND Simulation Suite

The original simulation suite, colloquially called the MacLab, was founded in 2014 at the University Hospital North Durham. It comprises of  18 iMac workstations with a centralised server and currently a database containing over 10,000 cases. The simulation suite is located within the trusts education centre at Prospect House, allowing access to the other amenities this brings.

RVI Simulation Suite

Following on from the success of the original simulation suite a second, larger, suite was funded at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle by the Northern Cancer Alliance. This facility will incorporate 22 iMac workstations with an iMac Pro server and state of the art projection facilities. It will be housed within the Sir James Spence Institute where it will be located alongside the newly opened education centre and with access to its supporting infrastructure.

Standardised Ultrasound Simulation Training Suite

The ultrasound simulation suite opened at the University of Teesside in 2015 is the largest facility of its kind in the UK. It comprises both Medaphor ScanTrainer simulation machines and diagnostic ultrasound machines. This facility is integral in providing basic ultrasound training for both radiologists and other allied health professionals.

Academy Training Sessions

The Academy acts as one of the main sites for training during the core training period, years 1-3. During ST1 trainees have two training days a week, on a Monday and a Wednesday. The Monday focuses on a delivering a clinical program, providing a grounding in the fundamentals of radiological interpretation. The Wednesday is focused on the FRCR Part 1 examination, providing lectures focused on both anatomy and physics. In years 2 and 3 a modular training program is delivered, which aims to cover the areas of the Royal College of Radiology syllabus relevant for the FRCR 2A examination.
