Hannah Garget Bursary

 

 

THE HANNAH GARGET RESEARCH BURSARY – 2019/20

Dr Hannah Garget was an Obstetrics & Gynaecology Trainee in the North East. She passed away in 2015 after bravely fighting an aggressive illness for a year. The Obstetrics & Gynaecology research teams from James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough, the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle upon Tyne and Sunderland Royal Hospital have jointly established a bursary in Hannah’s name. This bursary is offered annually and funds a Specialty Trainee in Obstetrics & Gynaecology in the North East, to undertake the Postgraduate Certificate in Clinical and Health Sciences with Clinical Research with Newcastle University [see link below].

The School of Obstetrics & Gynaecology in the North East has generously endorsed the idea and agreed to contribute to the funding to help establish the bursary. Newcastle University has also kindly agreed to discount the fees for the first year (2019-2020). The Research Bursary has the full support of Hannah’s family who have helped in the selection process.

Criteria: Applicants must fulfil the essential criteria below:

Essential criteria:

  1. Must be in a formal O&G Specialty Training post in North East England (i.e. holds a National Training Number).
  2. Must be at ST3 level or above at the time of application
  3. Must have passed the part 1 MRCOG examination at the time of application
  4. Must hold an ARCP 1 or 2 at the time of application
  5. Must be at least 12 months from achieving CCT at the start of the course (1 September 2019).
  6. Must be eligible for home student fees (or otherwise willing to top-up any shortfall if international fees are due).
  7. Will commit to using 9 days of study/personal leave allowance to attend the three modules necessary to complete the course.
  8. The trainee must commit to the mission statement for the bursary: “To spread research methodology knowledge in their future posts including active responsibility for: running journal clubs, teaching critical research appraisal and involvement in delivery of NIHR NHS portfolio research (where possible)”.

Desirable criteria:

  1. Has presented academic work at national/ international level.
  2. Has published academic work in peer-reviewed journals.
  3. Any other publications where the individual has significantly contributed (eg book chapters, case reports etc.)

Exclusion criteria:

  1. Those with a research certification or degree (Cert, Dip, MD, PhD)
  2. Those with  formal arrangements in place to undertake such a certificate or degree
  3. Those with a formal period of research agreed or underway (including those with an Academic Clinical Fellowship- Academic National Training Number)
  4. Those who have submitted an application for, or have an agreed date for inter-deanery transfer

     

    Funding:

The bursary for 2019 will cover the course fee of £2600 at Newcastle University. The successful applicant will have to commit to make up any additional funding required from their study budget and/or personal funds.

Application Process:

The Bursary will be advertised through Health Education England North East in February/March each year. Application will require submission of a curriculum vitae along with a covering statement outlining the reasons for applying (200 word limit).

For 2019, applications will be accepted until 5pm Friday 22nd of March 2019. Interview date will be set later. Shortlisting and interviewing will include representatives from the three founding units and a member of Hannah Garget‘s family as a lay member.

If the successful applicant cannot take up the course, the opportunity will be passed on to the next highest ranking applicant. Consideration for a placement in the following year will only be given in extenuating circumstances. Candidates who complete the course successfully will be invited to participate in the following years’ selection process.
