About Us

We pride ourselves on the fact that our rotations give General Practice experience in the first year. Our trainees have found that early exposure to general practice improves their learning experience by focussing on the specific skills and knowledge that transfer into general practice from their hospital posts.

Our standard programme comprises

• 1st Year - 6 months GP/6 months hospital post (Some programmes are the reverse of this)
• Second year is spent in hospital posts
• Final year 12 months general practice

There is also an option for integrated training posts in education and research.

The final 12 months in General Practice allows ample time to prepare for mandatory assessments, in particular the Consulting Skills Assessment (CSA) and allows for seamless transition into your professional working life.

We also offer Post CCT fellowships in education and are hoping to develop these in other clinical areas.

We have a wide selection of training posts available, most of which are based geographically allowing trainees to benefit from working in hospitals in the same area as their training practices and vice versa.  Due to the excellent road network the travelling distances are often shorter than perceived, in particular with regard to the northern aspect of our patch.

The Regional Teaching Programme is mapped to the RCGP curriculum and is provided throughout the three years. This allows weekly networking and support from your peers.  The trainees particularly value this continuity and the ability to share and discuss with their colleagues, especially during their hospital posts. Topics in the half day release are timed to best suit your needs, e.g. early in your final year focus on preparation for the CSA exam; in the final six months topics preparing you for transition to becoming a GP, such as:

 • GP appraisal
• Interview techniques
• Negotiating.

A unique feature is the trainer-led teaching sessions for trainees in their first and second year. These modular sessions are facilitated by local GP trainers and provide great learning in context and opportunity to meet our dedicated trainer group.

The programme has a dedicated support process for trainees experiencing difficulty or requiring extra support.

We have an established active trainee forum which allows you to have input into the programme.

We run closing the Gap: a bespoke course for International Medical Graduates. This is delivered early in the first year, introduces UK general practice and has a focus on developing skills.

We achieve consistently high ratings on the annual GMC national Trainee survey.
