Level 2 Training is for GPs working in a training practice or linked to a training network e.g. Hub & Spoke model
This level of trainer has been introduced to increase training capacity in a flexible and innovative way.
This is a pilot approach which will run for an initial period of two years. We will then review and evaluate the impact on training capacity and if the School feels that this approach has not had the required effect, we have the right to withdraw this level of trainer. If the decision is made to withdraw, you will be given the option to function at Level 1 Clinical Supervisor or proceed to become a full Trainer.
This level will build on Level 1, and will enable GP Educators to conduct Portfolio -Based Assessments that are part of GP Training. This includes Workplace Based Assessments and facilitating learning log entries. It also includes conducting topic-based tutorials.
This training will last three days and cover:
- Teaching the consultation
- Workplace based assessments
- Lesson planning
- Random and problem case analysis
- Teaching and certifying Clinical Examination and Procedural Skills
- Learning log entries and reflective writing
- Identifying and supporting trainees in difficulty
Applications and eligibility
- Have fully completed GP Training and have their CCT
- Be working within an existing GP training practice or be networked in some way with an existing GP trainer e.g. Hub & Spoke model
- Have completed Level 1 Clinical Supervisory training prior to attending this course

On completion participants will receive a Certificate confirming they are Registered with the School of Primary Care as an Associate Trainer. Participants will be approved as a Clinical Supervisor with the GMC for a period of two years.
We anticipate that the majority of Associate Trainers will proceed to become full trainers. This will be achieved via completion of a further three days of training, known as Level 3 Training
Associate Trainers will be incorporated into our existing trainer support systems and invited to Trainer educational events including the Annual Educator’s Conference. Associate Trainers will be required to undergo annual appraisal in the role in a manner similar to that undertaken by existing trainers.
Please note, we have suspended the course fees for our Level 2 & 3 Training Courses in 2021 and 2022, therefore, the courses are free to attend. Resubmission fees will still apply.
The taught course is free, but we do ask for a contribution towards the marking of the pre-course task which is £125. The link for payment will be sent once your application form has been processed.
The fee includes an element for first and second marking of the pre-course task but any resubmissions will incur an additional charge for marking of £125.
If the course is held face to face, catering will be provided. The course is voluntary and non-residential and therefore we would not refund any hotel or travel costs.
Please note that applications are accepted on a first come first served basis and if we reach capacity we will close the application window. If you would like to enrol on a course we recommend that you apply as soon as possible in order to secure a place.
We recognise that ideally face to face teaching would be preferred but to enable accessibility to the courses and to continue to offer them for free, the Trainer courses will continue to be delivered via video conferencing for the foreseeable future.
