Assessment

Overview

Trainees are required to use the AXIA on line e-portfolio. A brief overview of AXIA is given as part of the basic skills induction course. The portfolio was designed to support individual learning needs, reflective practice and to provide a record of activity and learning during the Dental Core Training year.

The portfolio forms a record of training and provides evidence that Trainees have received sufficient experience in order to achieve training objectives. It is imperative that all portfolios are kept up to date.

Documentation is provided within the portfolio to record induction meetings which should focus on clinical, educational and audit goals during the training programme and to inform a personal development plan. It is the responsibility of the individual Trainees to facilitate meetings with their Educational Supervisors at mutually convenient times.

Assessment Checklist

All Trainees should ensure they refer to the IRCP and FRCP checklists to ensure they are meeting the necessary requirements.

IRCP

Around mid-year point, all Trainees will undergo an IRCP (Interim Review of Competence Progression).   This is to ensure Trainees are on track with their learning requirements.  The IRCP panel for 2023-24 intake will take place in February 2024 (date to be confirmed).  Trainees are not required to attend in person.  Feedback will be provided either via email following the assessments or on a 1:1 basis by the individual Training Programme Directors (TPDs).

IRCP panels will normally consist of the following:

  • Regional Advisor for DCT
  • Trust and Primary Care/CDS TPDs
  • DCT Programme Officer

RCP

Nearing towards the end of the training year, all Trainees will undergo an RCP (Annual Review of Competence Progression) when portfolios will be assessed by a second panel. This panel will normally consist of:

  • Regional Advisor for DCT
  • Regional Advisor for DCT from another NHSE WT&E region
  • Trust and Primary Care/CDS TPDs
  • DCT Programme Officer
  • Lay Representative

RCPs for 2023/2024 intake are scheduled for July 2024 (date to be confirmed).  Once again, Trainees are not expected to attend and individual feedback will be provided at a later date either via email or on an indivudual 1:1 basis by TPDs.

Information and advice on preparing for IRCP and RCP can be found by accessing the Dental Gold Guide

Outcome

Dental Core Trainees whose portfolios meet or exceed the minimum requirements within the portfolio will be eligible for consideration for the award of a certificate of completion for the training year.
