At the beginning of the training year all trainees are issued with a paper portfolio, this is normally distributed as part of the basic skills induction course. The portfolio was designed to support individual learning needs, reflective practice and to provide a record of activity and learning during the Dental Core Training year. The model requires induction meetings at the beginning of each rotation (within two weeks of commencing) and appraisal meetings towards the end of each rotation.
Documentation is provided within the portfolio to record induction meetings which should focus on clinical, educational and audit goals during the training programme and to inform a personal development plan. It is the responsibility of the individual Trainees and Trainers to facilitate such meetings at a mutually convenient time.
Trainees are required to submit the following documentation within the portfolio as part of their Review of Competence Progression (RCP).
- Personal Development Plan (PDP)
- Hospital Self Assessment
- Self Assessment for Oral Surgery
- Signed Educational Agreements
- Evidence of documented Induction meetings
- Mid-point and final review to be completed and documented
- Minimum of six Mini-Cex
- Minimum of six DOPS
- Minimum of twelve CBDs
- Evidence of audit
- Clinical Activity Log
The necessary paperwork for these assesments are provided within the portfolio. When choosing clinical cases for assessment, it is important to cover a broad range of procedures and skills. If concerns arise surrounding any clinical activities, additional assessments may be required.
Trainees are required to keep a record of Continual Professional Development (CPD) and a log book recording clinical activity. A CPD template log can also be found in the portfolio.
Trainees are required to carry out a multisource feedback: 360 degree Team Assessment of Behaviour (TAB) form supplied. Forms should be distributed to 10 individuals across a range of peers. These could include clinicians of different grades, nursing and admin staff etc. TABs should be carried out during mid-way through the post.
The portfolio forms a record of training and provides evidence that Trainees have received sufficient experience in order to achieve training objectives. It is imperative that all portfolios are kept up to date.
At the end of the training year, all portfolios will be assessed by a designated panel as part of the RCP panel. The panel will normally consist of:
- Postgraduate Dental Dean
- Trust TPD
- DCT Programme Coordinator
RCP dates for 2017 can be found within the notable dates document.
Dental Core Trainees who portfolios meet or exceed the minimum requirements within the portfolio will be eligible for consideration for the award of a certificate of completion for the training year.
