Sedation and Oral Medicine

 

This DCT 3 post is shared between the departments of sedation and oral medicine.

Sedation

Facilities

The sedation department is located in a purpose built clinic on the third floor of the Newcastle Dental Hospital. There are 5 sedation surgeries fully equipped for intravenous and inhalational sedation. There is also a 4-bedded recovery area. The department offers treatment using intravenous midazolam sedation and inhalational sedation with nitrous oxide/oxygen. Anxious adult and paediatric patients requiring sedation for restorative or surgical dentistry are treated within the department. Approximately 3,000 patient episodes are undertaken within the department each year.

Staffing

The department is staffed by:

  • One full time Consultant
  • One full time Associate Specialist
  • 1.3 WTE Trust Grades in Sedation
  • SHO and GPT Staff
  • Dedicated dental sedation nursing support

Objectives

Trainees are trained in the safe use of concious sedation techniques for dental care. By the end of training, Trainees can expect to be able to:

  • select and assess adult and paediatric patients for sedation
  • undertake intravenus and inhalational sedation techniques
  • provide perio-operative care for sedated patients
  • undertake restorative and surgical dental procedures on sedated patients

Rotational information

The sedation component of the post is 5 sessions per week and consists of a mixture of:

  • diagnostic/assessment clinics
  • adult intravenous sedation treatment lists
  • paediatric inhalational treatment lists

Oral Medicine

Facilities

The oral medicine department is located on the 4th floor of the Dental Hospital. There are closed surgeries available for use together with the optional use of dental chairs in an adjacent open plan multi-chair clinical area. Approximately 2,500 patient episodes are undertaken in the department each year.

Staffing

The department is staffed by full time Honoray Consultant DCT 3 and GPT staff dedicated nursing support

Objectives

By the end of training, Trainees should have developed competencies in the diagnosis and management of a whole spectrum of conditions ranging from oral mucosal disease to facial pain. Training will be given with regards to skills required in the:

  • diagnosis of oral facial disease to facial pain
  • interpretation and prescription of relevant diagnostic tests
  • use of topical and systemic drugs in the management of common conditions managed within the specialty

Rotational information

The oral medicine component of the post is 5 sessions per week. During this time, Trainees can expect to be involved in the provision of outpatient treatment within the oral medicine department.
