The Health Education England (HEE) Primary Care School and Training Hub would like to support Primary Care Networks to develop their educational capacity with the aim of increasing the number of placements and learning opportunities for both GP registrars and the wide range of additional professional groups that are now working in primary care.

To fully engage with the production of our workforce of the future we need to continue to work to develop more placements in Primary Care.  These placements need to be of high quality to both encourage and support people into the profession and ultimately improve retention.

Expressions of Interest – Development of PCN Educational Leads

We are aware that some of you are developing PCN wide education programmes for your staff and others are engaging with the Enabling Effective Learning Environment team to increase placements.

HEE are finalising a process that will allow a larger organisation such as a PCN to apply to be an Educational Environment for the whole range of learners by completing one approval form.  This would allow any learner to be hosted on any of the sites in the network.

In order to work with us to ensure the quality of placements across a network, an educational lead will be required who will have a co-ordinating role for the environment approval process, be responsible for reviewing feedback from all learners in the network and for escalating issues initially to our recently appointed ICP aligned Training Hub Clinical Leads.

In order to support these developments, we have one off funding of up to £5000 per PCN for 2022/23 to support these lead roles and we are asking for expressions of interest for this funding.  Forms will need to be returned by Monday 21st February 2022.  Forms should be submitted FAO Juliet Carling to traininghub.nenc@hee.nhs.uk

There are a number of initiatives aimed at increasing GP training capacity which include

  • We are able to incentivise practices or networks to increase capacity with a one off payment of £5000 for additional GP training places established in 2022 – further details of this to follow
  • We have waived the fee for the intending trainers course again for 2022 – please contact  IntendingTrainers.NE@hee.nhs.uk if you know anyone who wishes to join one of our next cohorts
  • Our level 1 clinical supervisor day is designed to increase the skills of others in an organisation to support training and thus hopefully increase capacity – contact IntendingTrainers.NE@hee.nhs.uk
  • Non training parts of a network can link with training practices on a hub and spoke model to further increase capacity – please contact Lead TPDs of your local GP training programme
