Level 1 Clinical Supervisor Training

We are creating a cohort of Primary Care Clinical Supervisors to support GP Trainers. This will enable more trainers to consider hosting multiple postgraduate doctors in training.

If you are considering becoming a GP Trainer but not fully decided, this one day training may provide a taste of supervising learners. The full Intending Trainers Course can then be completed at a later date. Details are available here.

We have launched a series of one day online ‘Level 1’ Clinical Supervisor training days (dates below).

This training will cover:

  • The nature of workplace learning – what is being learnt and how
  • Learning from experience and how the educator facilitates this, in particular using skills of questioning and feedback
  • Key factors that influence the learning process, such as motivation, safety, self-efficacy
  • Learning from observation and modelling
  • Patient safety

The lesson plan can be found here.

This level is appropriate for OOH clinical supervisors, and those supervising Advanced Clinical Practitioners, Physician Associates, Clinical Pharmacists and Foundation Drs within primary care, and will be the first step on a primary care educators journey. Please note that the level 1 course is not intended for Clinical Supervisors in Hospitals. This level of training is also for those setting up a hub and spoke model with a neighbouring training practice/network.

It is available for post CCT GPs and is free to attend.

Please note this course is only available to clinicians in the North East & North Cumbria region.

Those who attend receive a certificate confirming they are registered with the School of Primary Care as a Primary Care Clinical Supervisor, which will be valid for 5 years.  You will then be required to apply for reappointment.

Recognition of prior learning

If you have completed a Certificate in Medical Education from a University within the last three years, you may be eligible to be registered with us as a Level 1 Clinical Supervisor, without needing to attend this training. If you think this may apply to you, please complete the relevant section on the application form.  If you would still like to attend the session, there is no need to complete this section. The lesson plan for the day is available here.
