Partnership Working with Newcastle University to award Full Registration for NUMed graduates
In 2011 Newcastle University opened a medical school, known as Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia (NUMed) in the State of Johor, on the southern tip of peninsular Malaysia. NUMed delivers the Newcastle MBBS curriculum with graduates obtaining the same General Medical Council (GMC) approved UK Primary Medical Qualification as their Newcastle-based counterparts.
Trainees and Trainers within our region past and present have taken up opportunities to work for a finite period of time for Newcastle University at their Malaysia campus in roles such as Teaching Fellows and Lecturers. Advertised opportunities are routinely emailed around our networks, however, to make an informal enquiry as to any current positions please contact Professor Vishna Devi V Nadarajah, Vice-Provost & CEO of NUMed, Vishna.Nadarajah@newcastle.edu.my
As a result of partnership working between NHS England Education North East office (formally Health Education England North East) and Newcastle University Medical School, an application was made to the General Medical Council to seek approval for provisionally registered doctors (NUMed graduates) training in Malaysia to be considered for sign-off of Full Registration. The application was not to seek to provide a UK Foundation Programme in Malaysia, but to demonstrate that the outcomes for provisionally registered doctors had been met through the Malaysian House Officer Programme under the responsibility of the NHSE North East Postgraduate Dean.
The GMC confirmed in March 2014 its approval of this application and, other than the Foundation Programme, is currently the only alternative programme for Full GMC Registration.
Quality management responsibilities of educational programmes and assessment via Annual Review of Competence Progression (ARCP) remain the responsibility of the Postgraduate Dean and are on-going requirements by the GMC, the same as for any postgraduate medical programme. A parallel structure to that of the Northern Foundation School is established, following the same quality governance used.
Multiple cohorts of NUMeD graduates have now submitted for ARCP and have been successfully signed off by NHSE North East for GMC Full Registration through this process. Future graduates will move through this process should they opt to be part of this programme.
For any enquiries relating to the Full Registration for NUMeD graduates, please contact Gemma.Crackett@nhs.net (Senior Business Manager).
